I moved 2500 miles in 2007 back to Toronto, Ontario, Canada, where I was born, from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
At the time I literally just wanted to run away from all the turmoil I was experiencing personally in my various relationships, family, friends, and exes, et al.
Now that I am in my mid-40s, the repercussions of this decision would make me realize how fast time can pass you by, especially since you are no longer in the proximity of your now aging parents that both suffering their own set of ailments.
My mom always telling me that “time waits on no one” made so much more sense.
I really started to deeply think if there was really a difference among time spent, invested, and wasted, and what is the best way to use it.
Time Spent, Wasted, Invested: Is there a difference?
1. What does time well spent mean?
Time well spent is any activity that provides value, meaning, or enjoyment in life. It can include spending quality time with family and friends, pursuing hobbies or interests that enrich your life, volunteering in the community, exercising regularly for health benefits, and more. It is important because it helps us to create memories that last a lifetime and gives us a sense of fulfillment by making the most of our days. Time well spent is when a person uses their time in an intentional and productive way that yields high returns. It can include activities such as spending quality time with loved ones, exercising regularly, or reading inspiring books.
Investing our time wisely can lead to better memories and more fulfilling experiences than if we were not investing it at all. Time well spent also provides us with an opportunity to grow as individuals while connecting with others in meaningful ways. Furthermore, it can help us stay motivated when times are tough by providing moments of nourishment during difficult periods in our lives (e.g., taking time out for meditation). Lastly, investing our time wisely also reduces stress levels since we know we are making good use of our resources instead of wasting them on activities that don’t bring us joy anymore or don’t add value to our lives overall.
2. What does time well wasted mean?
Time well wasted is time spent on activities or tasks that do not provide any value or return. It is important to recognize time well wasted because it can lead to a lack of fulfillment in life and a failure to make the most of your valuable resources. Time well wasted refers to the act of spending time on activities that are not worthwhile or productive.
When you waste your time on unimportant tasks, you are not making the most of your valuable resource—time. This can lead to an inability to create memories, spend quality time with loved ones, or even just relax and recharge during quiet moments. By recognizing what constitutes time well wasted and avoiding it as much as possible, you can ensure that your life is filled with more meaningful moments than meaningless ones.
This type of waste can take many forms, such as watching bad TV shows, engaging in pointless conversations with friends or coworkers, spending hours on a phone call with customer service about a minor issue, and so on. By investing your time in these types of activities instead of more meaningful ones, you are essentially wasting it because it is not yielding any positive results for you or others. Furthermore, if you consistently spend your time this way without considering its value or impact on your life goals then it will lead to unhappiness and dissatisfaction over time.
The opposite of time well spent is wasting time on activities that yield no return on investment or provide little to no benefit. This could include watching bad TV shows or spending hours on the phone arguing over a small fee. By consciously avoiding these types of poor investments, you can ensure that your time is being used wisely and yield positive results in your life.
The Time-Wasters We All Need to Eliminate
Everyone needs to eliminate time wasters from their lives, including but not limited to:
-
Interruptions (phone calls, text messages, emails)
-
Meetings that lack purpose or direction
-
Unnecessary conversations that are unproductive or unnecessary
-
Procrastination on important tasks or projects
-
Watching too much television or spending too much time on social media sites
-
Any activity that takes away from important tasks and responsibilities
3. What does time well invested mean?
Time well invested is the use of time to create memories, enjoy quality moments, and yield high returns. It involves thinking carefully about how we spend our days, hours, and moments in order to make the most of them. Time well invested is time spent on activities or tasks that yield valuable, lasting benefits. It is often associated with an improvement in quality of life or personal fulfillment. Time well invested can be contrasted with the time that is wasted, such as spending hours watching bad TV shows, 45 minutes on the phone arguing about a $5 charge, or years in a relationship that no longer fulfills you. Time well invested should provide some kind of return on investment—whether it be memories to cherish for years to come or peace of mind from knowing you’re making meaningful progress toward your goals. The benefits of investing time include:
-
Better memories and experiences
-
More hours well spent
-
Increased productivity and efficiency
-
Reduced stress levels and a healthier lifestyle overall
-
The ability to focus on what matters most in life and make better decisions with clarity of mind
-
Opportunities to explore passions, develop skills, and pursue goals that may take longer than a day or week to achieve but are worth the effort nonetheless
It is important to invest time wisely because it is one of our most valuable assets. We all agree that money can’t buy happiness but time can—it has the power to bring us joy and satisfaction if used wisely. Time well invested also helps us create meaningful memories that will last a lifetime as well as provide opportunities for personal growth. Additionally, it can help us avoid regrets by giving us insight into what we should or shouldn’t have done with our time in order to live more fulfilled lives.
You try to fill your day with things that make you happy and bring you joy, but somehow every day feels the same. You want to find ways to invest your time so that each day is productive and meaningful.
