Time Management vs. Energy Management Is  The Answer To Everything

When I first started my business, I became fascinated with time management. Every minute of my day was well organized, and I believed that by conquering time, I would have complete control over everything. But, throughout the years, I’ve understood something important: it’s not just how much time I have, but also how much energy I have to give. And, as a woman running a business, I’ve discovered that managing my energy is just as vital, if not more so, than managing time.

Why Time Management Isn’t Enough?

I used to feel that time management was critical to success. And don’t get me wrong: it is still vital. But there’s a limit to how much we can fit into our agendas. No matter how well I planned my day, there were moments when I just couldn’t get through every task I’d assigned myself. Why? Because I was fatigued and my energy was low.

Think about it—how many times have you had a busy schedule but found yourself dragging through the day, unable to focus or stay motivated? This is when time management falls short. It does not account for the swings in our energy levels, which can make or break productivity.

Really time management isn’t enough, so here’s the kicker.

The Real Game-Changer

I needed to start paying attention to my energy levels, not simply the clock.

What I discovered was eye-opening.

There are periods of the day when I am naturally more focused and creative, and others when I simply need to be away from my desk. Instead of forcing myself to conform to a fixed schedule, I started planning my days around my energy peaks and dips.

This adjustment has made a huge difference. By scheduling my most critical work for when I have the most energy, I not only get more done, but also do it better. My clients have realized that I can bring my whole self to work.

Understanding your strengths and weaknesses when in comes to managing my energy is a real game-changer. But that’s only part of the story, so let’s get down to it.

Here’s another not-so-secret but hard to take in …

The Power of Saying No

As a business owner, there is always something that needs to be done, and it’s easy to get caught up in trying to do it all. However, I discovered that crowding my schedule was causing me to burn out rapidly. So I made a conscious decision to preserve my energies.

Now, I prioritize tasks that are consistent with my business goals and personal values. If something doesn’t benefit my business or my well-being, I’m not afraid to decline it.

This was a difficult lesson to learn, but it has been one of the most powerful adjustments I’ve adopted.

Saying NO is so powerful in different aspects of a business. Trust me I know the feeling!

But more than that, balancing energy and time could also do wonders. So here we go!

Balancing Energy and Time in My Business

Time management is still an important aspect of my work.

However, it is currently in balance with energy management. I’ve discovered that the two go hand in hand. For example, I still utilize time blocks to plan my day, but I’m flexible about them.

If I’m feeling especially energized, I may extend a work session. If I’m running out of energy, I take a break, even if it’s not “scheduled.”

I also schedule time for activities that replenish me.

These breaks, whether they involve a quick stroll, a minute of meditation, or spending time with loved ones, are just as crucial as any job assignment. They’re what keep me going, day after day.

After knowing how to balance time and energy, the next question in mind is HOW?

How should we start today?

How You Can Start Managing Your Energy Today?

If you’re ready to incorporate energy management into your daily routine, here’s what I recommend:

  • Identify Your Energy Peaks

Pay attention to when you feel the most energized during the day. Are you a morning person, or do you find your rhythm in the afternoon? Use this time to do your most vital activities.

  • Prioritize Self-Care

Do not underestimate the power of rest. Schedule pauses and provide time for things that will recharge you.

  • Be Flexible

Don’t be scared to change your timetable depending on how you feel. It’s fine to rearrange things if your energy levels vary.

  • Set Boundaries

Remember that not all things really need your attention. Protect your energy by declining work or commitments that do not correspond with your goals.
